ABOUT US
Labour of Love operates at the intersection of women’s economic empowerment, sustainable production and preservation and promotion of African artisanal skills. We work with women in rural communities in Zimbabwe using home grown foods, fabric scraps and recycled elements to create new household items, gifts and accessories. We teach women how to harness the power of the sun to preserve food for year-round nutrition.
Our vision is to use our knowledge, talents and skills to create a world in which African women, men and children live in harmony with the earth, enjoy good health and prosperity and treat one another fairly. |

I'm Thembe Khumalo.
I was born in a little mission hospital in rural Matabeleland Zimbabwe, where my mother was a primary school teacher by day, and by night - an extraordinary craftswoman, creative and gifted like her mother before her. My mother instilled in me a love for working with my hands, and a reverence for being frugal, for simple living - from the garden to the kitchen, to the sewing room. But that’s not all my mother taught me: she showed me that as a woman in Africa I needed to take responsibility for myself, to hold on to my power by creating my own income. She taught me the importance of reducing waste, the joy of creating something from nothing, and the pleasure of serving others with my gifts. Labour of love is a tribute to many of the lessons my mother taught me, and my way of sharing them with other women in African and beyond. It is a salute to the beautiful land we live in, and a statement of gratitude for the bountiful natural resources we have here. My love affair with Africa runs deep and wide. It includes a podcast series that showcases African entrepreneurs and executives, and a consulting firm that supports brave African businesses with brand and communication strategy: Brandbuilder Africa. |
